Square Enix said, “[The title] gives the player direct control over iconic heroine Lightning in a constantly moving, expansive environment, on a quest to save a doomed world from complete destruction.”

Lightning Returns will see a larger level of customisation then the previous titles, with more freedom for the player. Motomu Toriyama, the director of the game said, “Increased levels of player freedom, customisation and connectivity with the real world, will ensure that this concluding chapter will be an exhilarating finale to Lightning’s story.”

Players can customise Lightning’s outfit and equipment, each changing her battle parameters, such as her abilities and stats. The new battle system will also be more action-oriented than previous titles which Square Enix says, “[The] new battle system gives a level of direct control over the action unlike any FINAL FANTASY game, while having iconic elements that are known and loved throughout the series too.”

As  a result of the dying world with only thirteen days left, the world will continue to change as the gameplay progresses. It will feature day and night cycles and, as time continues, missions, locations and characters will only be available during selected time periods. It is up to the player how they manage their time.

Furthermore, Lightning Returns will also feature a greater connected experience. “Stay connected to FINAL FANTASY and its characters, with unique features that link the in-game world to the real world.”

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled for a 2013 release on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
